The foundation of your smile is your gums, bone, and soft tissue.
You probably don’t know that gum or periodontal disease is the second-most common disease affecting people after the common cold. It is estimated that 75% of the population has some form of periodontal disease. Frequent, regular brushing and flossing may not be enough to combat it. Neither are regular professional cleanings.
That’s why you need Dr. Clifton’s soft-tissue management program. It’s a specific series of in-office treatments designed to eliminate gum disease and detoxify tooth surfaces below the gumline and in between the teeth. It includes:
• Root planing & scaling – Using special instruments once the area is numb so you are comfortable, Dr. Clifton deep-cleans the roots of teeth, making sure to remove all decay and bacteria from around each tooth’s roots and between the teeth. He then applies a special medication to flush any infection-causing bacteria.
• More frequent professional cleaning – Dr. Clifton will also recommend an increase in your dental hygiene visits from once or twice per year to three or four times a year. This will ensure that you maintain the healthy gums/soft tissue you achieved with the soft-tissue management program.
• Site Specific Antimicrobial Treatment – Following scaling and root planing there may be areas that present an increased risk for reoccurring gum disease. Your dentist can treat these sites with a local antibiotic treatment (Arestin) to give them the best opportunity to heal in a way that healthy tissue can be maintained.
Remember: You can control periodontal disease. With careful, ongoing monitoring and maintenance treatment, and good daily home care, you can keep your gums healthy and preserve your natural smile.
